Sonja Petermann

Apprentice

Sonja is an artist originally from St. Louis working primarily in dance and print media. She grew up drawing and dancing. Even in college, while working toward her BFA in printmaking and drawing, she maintained her enthusiasm for movement and became involved in student-run dance performances and national dance festivals.

After graduating, Sonja danced with the company Equal Footing in performances at the Midwest Regional Alternative Dane festival in Kalamazoo, MI, and the Bio/Dance and Social Justice series in Rochester, NY.

Since moving back to her home city, Sonja has dedicated ample time working for various local printshops, including The Firecracker Press, Island Press, and Central Print. She recently co-founded an artist collective, Our Women Before Us, as a way to satisfy her desire to combine her various mediums into a transdisciplinary practice that utilizes both visual and performance art in the pursuit of women’s rights and the spiritual practice of creating from shared female memory.

Sonja is now thrilled to begin her journey dancing with CKDC and strives to approach art as a method for improving conditions of community, one of the best ways to spend time and creative energy.
